Zone 3.3 Chess Championships

The Zone 3.3 Chess Championship was held in Tagaytay City, Philippines from March 2 to March 3. The chess tournament drew 36 woodpushers in the open category while in the women's division drew 20 players. Five (5) Southeast Asian (SEA) nations participated in the two-day mind tournament. These were Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and the Philippines. 

In the open category, Li Tian Yeoh of Malaysia emerged as the champion in the open category after a draw result in the last round against his rival Haridas Pascua of the Philippines. The draw gave him a total of 7 points tied with Vietnamese Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son who also has 7 points but Yeoh who has a higher tiebreak points emerged as rank number one. 

Aside from the cash prize, the triumph of Yeoh made him qualify for the World Cup to be held in Batumi on September and he also collects his first GM norm in this tournament. 
 
Third place went to Philippines' Oliver Dimakiling and Singapore's Xiangyi Liu who earned 6 points after the 9th round.

In the women's category, the first place went to Thi Kim Phung Vo of Vietnam who collected a total points of 7. She was followed by another Vietnamese player Thi Bao Tram Hoang who earned 6.5 points tied with Singapore's Qianyun Gong. Vietnamese IM Pham Le Thao Nguyen and Sukandar came in fourth and fifth, respectively.
